Feasability study of clay pot irrigation system in Yazd provice.

Water scarcity is a major problem in Yazd province, central plateu of Iran. Subsurface irrigation systems, especially clay pot method, can be introduced as a solution for prevention of aridity and drought hazards in this region. This study investigates feasibility of pot irrigation method, its performance, advantages and limitations in Yazd province. Differet types of this method (including clay pots, flower pots, clay pipes, clay caps, polyethylene subsurface drip irrigation and etc.) were introduced and compared together from the view of their features and performances. Additionally, special condition of Yazd province including topography, evaporation, rainfall, water resource quality and etc. was investigated to introduce a proper irrigation system for this condition. Alghough there were found some advantages for ancient clay pot irrigation system, this feasibility study points to the lack of a technical guideline for proper desing, implement and use of this system in different soil, plant, atmosphere and water conditions. This guideline, however, should include system desing criterias, acceptable working pressure and discharge ranges, manufactorer coefficient of variation, suitable pot porosity, water quality criteria and other necessary information for safe and proper desing of the system. Lack of the guideline, espicially for large irrigation projects, would obstruct system improvement, elimination of clay pot limitations and their upgrade. Therefore, substitution of existing clay pot systems with advanced subsurface irrigation methods (e.g. polyethylene sudsurface drip irrigation, SDI) is highly recommended for the studied condition.
