Interaction of irrigation levels (based on the line-source technique) and amounts of nitrogen fertilizer on yield and quality of tea green leaf were studied in a field experimental at Feshalam Tea Research Station in Fouman (Guilan) during three years (2008-2010). The experimental model was the strip plot design with two factors based on randomized complete block with four replications. The main plots included six levels nitrogen fertilizer 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500 Kg N ha-1 and each main plot was divided into five contiguous irrigation sub-plots (fully irrigation, deficit irrigation and rainfed/unirrigation ). The yield for the fully irrigated with well fertilized (300 kg N ha-1) treatments reached upto 3.92 t ha-1 of made tea in three years average and in rainfed plot was 1.67 t ha-1 with 200 Kg N ha-1. Water use efficiency in fully irrigated recieving 300 Kg N ha-1 was 6.75 Kg ha-1 (made tea) for each mm icreasing in water used. For tea with little or no fertilizer applied, the increase of yield (WUE) was between 3.8 to 4.2 Kg ha-1 mm-1. The slope (ky) of the relation between the relative yield loss and the relative reduction in water use was very steep (ky=1.3) reflecting the sensitivity of shoot growth and yield of tea to water stress. By increasing nitrogen fertilizer, caffeine content in shoot and nitrogen in third leaf show increase trend while tannine content, total ash, water extract and dry matter decreased. Key words: Tea, Irrigation, Nitrogen, Water use efficiency,Yield, Quality, Iran.
