Economic study of the traditional livestock husbandry.

For generations, traditional livestock husbandry has been prevalent in the country. In recent years, this type of raising sheep has faced with serious problems such as scarcity of feeds and lower productivity. On the other hand. dominance of this method led to range deteriaration and overgrazing. This research was aimed to recognize the present situation of the mentioned type of animal husbandry in order to find some solutions to their problems. Firoozabad district in the Fars Province of Iran, was selected for study, mainly because it is a main pole of traditional animal husbandry. Using the cluster and simple randomized sampling method, a sample of 151 of producers were selected and through interviews and filling up the questionairs, the needed data were collected. The data were analyzed by using the TSP software. The production, income and cost functions were estimated. The results showed that the herd combination differes in various parts of the district due to climatic conditions. 70 percent of producers indicates that their flock size is below 100 heads. The capacity of the range was much lower than herd pDpulation. As a consequence, the rate of range deterioration was increased sharply. The majority of the size of flocks is lower than optimum. Increasing number of family labour, lack of suitable Jobs, high price of forage, and low price of meat have caused many producers to face with serious problems in a way that could not meet the family needs.
