According to the Framework Directive 2009/128/EC on the sustainable use of pesticides, farmers have to follow integrated pest management principles compulsory since January 1, 2014. The data from monitoring of weed population are relevant for successful integrated weed management. Cereals were the main crops grown in the surveyed fields (73%–81% of all the fields visited) in Kurzeme region. During the time period 2013–2014 the average weed density in the cereal fields was 89 pcs m-2 identifying 21 various weed species. Approximately 50%–60% annual broad-leaved species and approximately 10%–20% perennial grass weed species were found. Elymus repens (L.) Gould, Viola arvensis Murray, Polygonum convolvulus L., Centaurea cyanus L. were dominant weed species in the surveyed cereal fields in Kurzeme region.
