Tensile properties of aged natural fiber reinforced polyester composites
2006

Natural fiber reinforced composites are utilized as non-load bearing or lightweight loading applications especially as interior parts. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the environmental effect suc as temperature exposure on natural fiber composites. In this present work, composites contained different fiber volume fractions5,10 and 15%. Aging treatment are performed on composite at different temperature range 27,50 and 80c in furnace environment. Tensile samples are then stressed quasi-statically at constant cross-head displacement 1.5mm/min. It is observed that composite contained 15% fiber loading sustained higher tensile properties rather than others aged composites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that shorter fiber pull-out is detected for aged composites with significant interfacial debonding at higher aging temperature but this treatment caused loss in maximum elongations and loads due to less fiber bridging. Therefore, environmental effect degrade the properties of natural fiber reinforced composites.
