Air-bone harvesting systems in steep terrain will only be operational in Peninsular Malaysia in the medium term. In the meantime, short-term solutions for the mitigation of the emvironmental impact of ground-based timber harvesting are needed. The exixting road constrution and harvesting guidelines based on the tradional ground skidding system (GSS) consider many aspects of Reduced Impact Logging (RIL). The lack, however, clear instructions on the appropriate machinery and its proper use. It is neither realistic nor desirable to replace the existing machinery for road construction and harvesting in total, especially not in the short term. Instead, based on an analysis of major shortcomings, the paper proposes re-designing of the current harvesting operations and a re-tooling of machinery and equipment. Recommendations for damage assessment and for training of the personnel involved in harvesting are given.
