Genetic variation for grain mineral content: iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) of IPB open pollinated Var 6 (dent and flint types)

The extent of genetic variation for Fe and Zn concentrations among 40 IPB OP Var 6 populations (dent and flint types) grown in Calamba, Laguna, Sta. Maria, Laguna and Ibaan, Batangas [Philippines] was determined. Entries from said populations were chemically analyzed for Fe and Zn content. Significant differences for Fe and Zn concentrations were detected among entries (P0.001). In Calamba, Laguna, kernel-Fe varied from 35.83 to 56.19 mg/kg, 36.64 to 53.75 mg/kg for Sta. Maria Laguna and Ibaan, Batangas had 44.59 to 67.57 mg/kg. On the other hand, kernel-Zn content ranged from 49.32 to 54.27 mg/kg, 38.83 to 55.27 mg/kg, and 51.79 to 57.62 mg/kg for Calamba, Laguna, Sta Maria, Laguna and Ibaan, Batangas, respectively. Location had significant effect (P.0001) as well as entry (genotype) x location (environment) interaction for these micronutrients. Dent and flint types did not have significant effects on kernel-Fe but in terms of kernel-Zn, it was significant. Broad sense heritability (H) estimates computed for iron character was 41.16% while 96.82% was noted for zinc. kernel-Fe was positively correlated with kernel Zn (R square
