In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there were presented research results of the study with the aim to offer a number of new criteria for quantitative diagnostics degraded peat soils, which were the result of a study of chemical and biological properties of peat soils of different stages of evolution. Based on established patterns of the variation of the ratio C:N, biological activity and the energy potential of the content of organic matter in peat soils, it is concluded that for the separation of agropeat soil and degropeat one threshold content of organic matter in the upper peat-mineral horizon should be considered as 35%. Using established patterns of the degree variation of these indicators parameters in different stages evolution peat soils proposed criteria for diagnosis. For the more efficient use of the anthropogenic-transformed peat soils it is necessary to have qualitative criteria and quantitative parameters of each stage of evolution. The main criterion for determining the properties of these soils is the content and quality of organic matter. The other properties of peat soils are in close connection with it: ash, density, moisture content, the ratio QN, nitrogen mobility fund, biological activity and energy potential. In this case, the dependence of the parameters of the last four indicators on the content of organic matter in soils is curvilinear in nature.
