Cultivation of isolated plant tissue represents a perspective direction of modern agricultural biotechnology. Growing of somatic tissue cultivars and regeneration of the whole plants allow receiving somaclonal variants – genetically modified regenerant-plants, differ from parental forms. Such somaclonal species, exceeding initial sorts on economic characteristics, appear essential selection material. The article presents the data on the use of in vitro culture for obtaining of somatic variants of flax (Linum usitatissimum), which may become the source material to create new cultivars and expanding the gene pool of flax. PCR with arbitrary primers establishes the difference of somaclonal lines from the original flax cultivars. Promising samples that have a set of economically useful traits are identified on the basis of phenotypic changes. The obtained results allow considering that somaclonal variability is an effective tool for practical breeding of flax.
