The collection of articles devoted to the fisheries sector and confirms its annual performance. This year Latvia and its economy have borne many challenges. Introduction of the Euro has been seen without a hitch, industry continues successfully develop, manufacture and invests many millions of Euros. Fishing, at the Fleet Adaptation to the available resources, the sea is now going well a smaller number of vessels, but fishing has become more cost-effective and the amount of catches per vessel has increased significantly. Everything would be fine, unless the new challenges not mystical change in the Baltic Sea cod stocks, which even scientists have a hard time understanding. Cod simply no longer impossible to catch, even though the quota is large enough. In turn, the herring stocks have increased significantly as in the Baltic Sea, as well as in the Gulf of Riga. A sprat stock in recent years has been a downward trend, which is also a challenge for the whole industry. Future challenge for industry is the European Maritime Fisheries Fund 2014 UN-2015th year, which will provide essential support to the future development of the fisheries. Specific Expectations is placed on the development of the potential of aquaculture in Latvia. This is another completely unused capacity, so for this sector in Latvia, like other European Union Member States, is dedicated to a separate strategic plans. International co-operation arena for Latvia is very important challenge was European Union on the Baltic Sea littoral states cooperation management. Latvia how BALTFISH Forum Presiding State (July 2013 - June 2014) reached a number of common solutions in the 8th fisheries management issues. It was prepared for the United Nations of the European Union Council of Ministers in accordance with BALTFISH proposal adopted in 2014. The annual catch quotas developed a joint recommendation on fish landing obligation of compulsory conditions which will enter into force very soon - on 1 January 2015.
