Aspects of the ecology of rice black bug (Scotinophara coarctata (Fabricuis)) Hemiptera:Pentatomidae in Luzon [Philippines]
2015
Hadi, B. | Villareal, S.C.
Rice black bug (Scotinophara coarctata) is an insect pest of rice, especially in the southern part of the Philippines. Rice black bug infestation has increasingly been recorded in the northern parts of the country. While there are reports on the rice black bug's ecology in the southern parts of the country, no published report is available on rice black bug ecology in Luzon. Routine monitoring of rice black bug at IRRI rice fields indicated that rice black bug's performance and preference is affected by levels of N fertilizer. Controlled experiments showed that rice black bug's performance is indeed better on plants receiving high N fertilizer, although very high N fertilizer rate may have negative effects on nymphal survivorship. The authors also report on the results of an on-going light trapping study elucidating the timing and intensity of rice black bug migratory flights in Luzon.
