Study of genetic variability in maize inbred lines under irrigated and drought conditions

The knowledge of genetic variation and its potential use in a breeding programme is important to exploit genetic variability among species and varieties within species. In present experiment, fifty inbred lines were used to study the genetic variability in different traits of maize under drought and irrigated conditions during spring 2008. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The factors consisted are normal irrigation and drought stress conditions. Results revealed that significant differences were found for number of days taken to 50% tasseling, number of days taken to 50% silking, number of ears less than and 100-grain weight (g). The highest mean value of 37.05 was produced by inbred line USSR15 for 100-grain weight under irrigated condition while under drought condition W-64-TMS had maximum 100-grain weight of 30.55 g. Overall, the 100-grain weight, days to tasseling, and number of cobs decreased, whereas days to silking increased under drought conditions.
