GIS [Geographical Information System]-aided animal production impacts analysis on the environment in Laguna Province [Philippines]

Livestock production is a possible approach to alleviate poverty especially for the rural poor. However, while the sector gains intensity, problems attendant such as soil and water pollution, animal health and diseases, nutrient loading and contribution to global warming also increased. Failure to address these problems will create greater harm on people's health and the environment. This study commissioned by FAO [Food and Agriculture Organization], aims to provide an objective assessment of environmental animal health and production in Laguna, Philippines in both qualitative and quantitative terms, as a baseline for future temporal and spatial comparisons. Using Geo-Information as a tool with secondary data collection and survey as means to collect the input data, overlay maps were created. The use of animal unit density of livestock and poultry farms was also developed to determine the hotspot areas in terms of production, health and diseases, nutrient loading and contribution to global warming. As a result, the study was able to (1) map distribution, quantities and densities, (2) identify trends and patterns, and (3) delineate hotspots, which aided significantly in studying livestock and environment interaction in Laguna Province.
