Seaweed and seaweed- derived products have been widely used in crop production systems for its ability as a plant growth promoting supplement. Considering this, a pot experiment under greenhouse conditions was conducted in a 3x4 factorial RCBD experimental design to investigate radiation-modified carrageenan (RMC) in combination with varying levels of inorganic fertilizer on the growth and yield of NSIC Rc216 rice variety during 2015 DS. Factor A was Fertilizer Level: 0 NPK or 0 RR (F1), 45-20-20 kg NPK/ha or 1/2 RR (F2), and 90-40-40 kg NPK/ha or full RR (F3). Factor B was the carrageenan treatments: no application (C1), 200 ppm (C2), 300 ppm (C3), and 400 ppm (C4). Foliar application of RMC was done at tillering and panicle initiation stages while inorganic fertilizer was applied at basal and early panicle initiation. Results showed that plant height was enhanced when foliar spraying was applied at 200:300 ppm RCM. At 400 ppm however, plants were found to be shorter but produced more tiller than the other treatments. Across fertilizer levels, plants applied with 300 and 400 ppm had higher yield compared to the control (21.9 g/pot) with 7.74% (23.6 g/pot) and 1.20% (22.1 g/pot) yield increase, respectively. Moreover, an increase in leaf greenness (SPAD), and total chlorophyll content (TCHL) were observed after 2nd spraying of RMC as compared to the control. Further, a positive correlation was observed between SPAD reading and TCHL in a chlorophyll assay conducted. Among the set-ups where only RMC was applied, 400 ppm proved to enhance SPAD and TCHL. However, combination of half and full PR inorganic fertilizer with 300 ppm increased TCHL by 20.6 and 14.6%, respectively. Overall, the foliar application of carrageenan showed potential in enhancing the growth and yield of rice.
