Effect of organic fertilizer on crop yield in degraded soil, Bac Giang province

Research on role of organic fertilizer has conducted by many researchers in Viet Nam. Application of organic fertilizer not only provides necessary nutrient elements for crops and increases crop yield, but also improves soil properties as well as enhances the effectiveness of chemical fertilizers. Degraded soil characterizes by low organic carbon, low nutrients content and light texture, therefore, apply organic fertilizer for crops on degraded soil is not only improve crop yield, the soil fertility improved also. This study emphasis on the effect of organic fertilizer for crops on degraded soil in Bac Giang province with cropping system: spring rice - summer rice - winter maize. The research results have indicated that the increment of crop yield depends on the amount of organic fertilizer applied. Yield of rice in spring season increased from 18.1 to 33.1%, in summer reason increases from 6.8 to 18,5% and yield of winter maize increased from 9.0 to 27.4%. From this study, it recommends that, on degraded soil, the optimum rate of organic fertilizer for paddy rice is 7 ton/ha and for winter maize is 10 ton/ha. Incubate biochar and organic fertilizer with rate 5%, 15% and 25% and applied for crops in combining with chemical fertilizers has significantly improved crop yield, it depends on the rate of biochar, rice yield increased from 0,2 to 9.1% in spring season, from 0.5 to 10.3% in summer season and yield of maize increased from 0.8 to 12.3%. The suitable rate of biochar incubates with oraganic fertilizer is 15% of mass for both of increased crop yield and the limited source of harvested rice straw. Using organic fertilizer mixed with 15% biochar in combination with chemical fertilizers has increased the economic efficiency in three crops, for spring rice: 17.5%, summer rice: 21.9% and winter maize: 21,6% as compare with organic fertilizer non-mixed with biochar.
