Strategic work of FAO to reduce rural poverty
2016
Poverty is one of the biggest obstacles to human development. Although much has been achieved by countries in past decades in reducing the number of the poor worldwide, there is still much to be done. Poverty and its consequences – malnutrition, hunger and lack of opportunities – limit human development. Conscious of the interconnectedness of these issues, countries committed through the Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty and hunger by 2030. FAO’s mandate of eradicating hunger and poverty is at the heart of the Goals. We advocate for a strong focus on rural development and people’s livelihoods to end poverty and hunger and bring about sustainable development. This is why one of FAO’s strategic objectives is to reduce rural poverty. The corporate brochure on FAO’s Strategic Programme to Reduce Rural Poverty presents to a broad range of audiences how the Programme consolidates FAO’s efforts to achieve this strategic objective. It introduces the areas of work covered by the Programme along with impacts at different geographic levels.
