The genetic diversity of 87 cassava accessions was assessed using 23 morphological markers. The groupings obtained with the use of morphological data were similar to those obtained with molecular data. However, the diversity generated with molecular data (70%) was higher than that generated with morphological data (40%), which indicates higher sensitivity of the molecular markers in detecting differences among cassava accessions. In addition, the polymorphism information content (PIC) computed based on band scores per primer ranged from 0.55 to 0.94, indicating high polymorphism. Based on the calculate PIC values, the results also showed efficiency of cross-amplifying simple sequence repeat (SSR)markers developed for other crops to cassava. Introgression of desirable traits from genetically distant but good performing cassava accessions can be exploited to develop new varieties. Moreover, analysis of the extent of genetic diversity of cassava can help to alleviate the cost of germplasm management by avoiding identified duplicates in the field.
