QTL mapping for salinity tolerance at the reproductive stage in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

One of the climate change catastrophes that pose a growing threat to sustainable production of rice (Oryza sativa L.) is salinity or salt stress. Rice is sensitive to salt stress at seedling stage and reproductive stage but are poorly associated and therefore governed by different sets of processes, genes or QTLs. Reproductive stage salinity tolerance is important as it is on this stage that grain yield will be ultimately dictated. A phenotyping technique recently developed was used to screen and mapped QTL from 192 F4 plants derived from the cross between CSR28 (salt tolerant) and SADRI (salt sensitive). Results of this study showed clear discrimination between tolerant genotypes from sensitive genotypes. Tolerant genotypes showed higher grain yield and lower accumulation of toxic ions in the flagleaf compared to sensitive genotypes. This study proved the efficacy of the technique in screening different genotypes as well as mapping populations. Moreover, the QTLs detected on this study which are located on Chromosome 1, 3, 7 and 11 can also be further analyzed or validated and will be useful in marker-assisted selection in the future.
