Enhancing value chain for peanut productions: verification trials on the response of peanut to boron fertilization under sandy soils growing condition in Region 02 [Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino](Philippines)

In Cagayan Valley [Philippines], peanut is dominantly cultivated in sandy soils along river-flood-prone areas. Productivity in these area is generally low due to poor quality of harvested pods (empty pods and internal nuts/ seed damage) caused by Boron (Solubor Borax and Fertibor product form) application on peanut. From the series of on-farm trials in sandy soils having 0.06 ppm Boron content, it was found out that the combined application of Solubor Borax (200 grams/ha,and Fertibor (2-3 kgs/ha) at 25-30 DAP or before flowering had resulted to remarkable yield increase of 627--693 kg/ha, 709.1-1097.1 kgs/ha and 1641-19017 kgs/ha for BPI Pn 9,NSIC Pn 15 and NSIC Pn 14 improved variety, respectively which can be translated to increase income ranging from Php 10,000-20,000/ha. Economic analysis, however, revealed that is more economical to use Solubor Borax in single application at the rate of 500 grams/ha as manifested by higher percentage MBCR. Apparently the significant yield increase of 60-70% is due to more fully developed pods as a result of profuse flowering and improved seed quality caused by Boron fertilization by absence of hollow heart pod disease. It is therefore recommended that Boron application must form part of the package of technology for peanut production to achieve better yield and income amidst poor soil and drought conditions.
