This study was conducted at the Philippine Rice Research Institute-Central Experiment Station, Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] to determine developmental stages and leaf number of selected three-line hybrid rice parents using leaf counting method. The genotypes were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Four CMS lines (IR80559A, PR2A, PR29A and PR15A) and nine restorer lines (PR36246, PR37246, PR34142, PR35749, PR36244, PR36248, IR73012, SRT-3R and AC66-IR) were used in the study. Leaf count of each parental lines in different developmental stages were established as baseline information to ensure synchronized flowering. Significant differences were observed from analysis of variance for the production of leaves of the main culm at seedling, mid-tillering, panicle initiation, and emergence of flag leaves across parents. This implies that the production of leaves during these stages varies across different parent lines. The primordial panicle stage started at 40-45 days after sowing when leaf number had an average of 14 leaves in all parent lines. It was also observed that duration of panicle development is shorter in early-maturing than medium maturing parent lines. The established leaf counts at flag leaf emergence were 15.60, 15.03, 14.62 and 16.97 for IR80559A, RR2A, PR29A, and IR15A, respectively. For restorer lines namely: PR37246, PR36246, PR34142, PR35749, PR36244, PR36248, IR73012, SRT-3R and AC66-1R, established leaf count were: 16.60, 16.03, 15.23, 16.50, 14.97, 16.43, 14.90 and 16.17, respectively. Leaf difference of A-line to R-line ranged from 2.10 to 2.74 or equivalent to 6-8 days difference.
