Estimating mid-season nitrogen requirements of rice based on nitrogen-rich strip using prototype GreenSeeker
2017
Ramos, M.A. | Tallada, J.G.
Rice grain yields vary from season to season even in plots receiving the same level of fertilizers. Right timing and amount of fertilizer can increase the grain yield and agronomic nitrogen (N) use efficiency. By using nitrogen-rich (N-rich) technology, it will improve the N fertilizer management. N-rich plant will be a guide to the farmer for a proper time of applying nitrogen during midseason by visual assessment of the N-rich plot crop and crop in the other representative plots. By doing this, it can help the farmers in decision making for a timing of nitrogen application and improve nitrogen use efficiency. Sensor readings were taken weekly with a prototype of GreenSeeker sensor, starting early tillering to panicle initiation. Sensor is 50 cm above plant canopy and measured in one square meter. This study aimed to test N-Rich technology and prototype GreenSeeker sensor to detect the time and rate requirement of rice at panicle initiation stage. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) differed significantly with different N rates and growth stages indicating that it can be used to determine the time of N application considering proper N application and right timing of sensor reading NDVI in DS 2016 has positive relationship to the grain yield, NDVI increased the grain yield also increased. However, during the wet season, NDVI had negative relationship to the grain yield due to heavy rain and strong wind causing lodging of the crop during reproductive stage that resulted to low yield.
