Interactive effect of source of irrigation and NPK on growth, yield and quality of maize hybrids
2011
Khan, R.D.
The present study was conducted at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during spring 2010 to assess the interactive effect of NPK and source of irrigation on growth, yield and quality of maize hybrids. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with split-split arrangement, having three replications and a net plot size of 3 m x 5 m. The treatments comprised of source of irrigation (S1= Canal water, S2= Sewage/ Domestic wastewater and S3= Municipal/Industrial wastewater) in main plots, fertilizer rate (F1 = 0-0-0 NPK and F2 = Recommended dose of NPK i.e., 250, 125 and 125 kg per ha respectively) in sub plot and hybrids (H1 = Monsanto-6142 and H2 = Supraseed-4444) in sub-sub plot. The results showed that maximum biological and grain yields were achieved using municipal wastewater with 250-125-125 kg NPK per ha. Also municipal wastewater irrigation had positive significant influence on growth and yield components. While among hybrids Monsanto-6142 was found to be more yielding. Wastewater irrigation and fertilizer application significantly increased the seed starch and protein contents. While oil contents were increased with wastewater application and decreased with fertilizer application. The heavy metal (Cd, Ni, Pb, Cu and Zn) contents of seed were within the limits of international food standards.
