Isolation and screening of efficient bacteria for degradation of reactive black

Several industries especially textile industry use significant amount of synthetic dyes and dispose off their wastes through outlets into wastewater streams and ultimately contaminate the soil and water. These dyes are mostly carcinogenic and xenobiotic in nature so the industrial waste should be treated before its release into the wastewater streams. Synthetic dyes are mostly azo dyes and can be degraded by physicochemical processes but the biological degradation is more efficient, cost effective and environment friendly. Various bacteria have ability to degrade azo dyes. This present study is designed to isolate and screen the efficient bacteria which have ability to degrade azo dye (Reactive Black) under optimum environmental conditions. Wastewater samples was collected from various textile industries around Faisalabad city and the bacterial strains were isolated, then screened on the basis of their decolorization ability using Reactive Black azo dye as sole source of C and N. After the initial evaluation bacterial strain IFN4 was found to be the most efficient strains which was used for further study in which different environmental conditions like pH, temperature, aeration, salinity, carbon sources, nitrogen sources and size of inoculum were optimized. It was that IFN4 efficiently decolorize Reactive Black having optimal conditions at pH 7 under static conditions at 35-40 degree C, yeast extract as carbon source and ammonium chloride as nitrogen. Data was analyzed with appropriate statistical analysis.
