Fluctuations in mineralization of various organic materials variation in moisture and temperature of soil

Organic matter and minerals are two natural sources of nutrients for plants to providing nutrients and habitat to organisms living in the soil, organic matter also binds soil particles into aggregates that improves water holding capacity, porosity, structure and biological activity of soil. Mineralization of organic material is ability of soil to support soil life that describes the level of microbial activity. Predicting carbon mineralization rate of different organic amendments at different temperature and moisture levels was our main objective of this study. Firstly soil samples were prepared by adding five different organic amendments (wheat straw, flyash, farm yard manure, peat and biochar) @ 2% w/w in each soil sample along with three different moisture levels (25, 50 and 75%). Samples were incubated at (20, 30, and 40 degree C) temperatures for 15 days interval. 1N NaOH solution was used to calculate mineralization rate. The CO2 production was determined by back titration of the NaOH solution with 1N HCl using phenolphthalein as an indicator after every 7 days and solution was changed to avoid saturation. Experiment was laid out in complete randomized design with three replications of each treatment. At the end of study soil organic carbon, aggregate stability, cumulated respiration rate of CO2 and coarse fragment organic carbon were determined. The data were analyzed statistically and treatments were compared using (HSD) test. The results showed that coarse fragment organic carbon, cumulated respiration CO2 and soil organic carbon were increased by using peat as organic amendment while biochar showed increased aggregate stability.
