Screening of sugarcane germplasm against whip smut disease in relation to epidemiological factors in Faisalabad

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) crop is under danger from different diseases. Among these, whip smut caused by Ustilago scitaminea is very vital. In Pakistan, frequency of the disease is relatively expanded uniquely among most recent couple of years because of changes in temperature and relative humidity. In this way, it is vital to figure out the association between whip smut disease, epidemiological factors and impact on the resistance in sugarcane clones. It is additionally vital to calculate the losses brought about by the disease. Keeping in view all above specified factors, the February planted crop (at Sugarcane Research Institute SRI, Faisalabad) was intended to work out the reaction of sugarcane clones against whip smut with respect to the changed states of climate (max temperature, min temperature and relative humidity) and the losses because of whip smut disease in the susceptible lines. The influence of environmental factors on disease development was studied through correlation analysis. Out of fifteen varieties eight varieties (S2006-US-469, S2006-US-272, S2005-US-54, S2008-AUS-130, S2006-US-658, S2008-A US-190, S2008-AUS-l 07, S2009-SA-169) showed the resistant response against the whip smut disease, six (S2008-M-34, S2008-AUS-133, S2003-US-127, S2003-US-704, S2008-Fd-19, S2008-AUS-87) showed the moderately susceptible response against whip smut disease while one variety (S2003-US-618) showed susceptible response against whip smut disease. There was a negative correlation of maximum and minimum temperature with disease incidence and positive correlation of relative humidity with disease incidence.
