Biological and cultural methods for deterring the bird pests in some fruit crops
2016
Bibi, S.
Studies on the biological and cultural methods for inhibiting the bird population in some fruit crop were extended for a period of 120 days in the four months viz. December through March with 30 minutes time durations (06:40-08:40) to determine the crow and myna visitations. Number of crows and myna which was recorded emerging and returning in the morning hours indicated some variation, with considerably less birds returning. On day one a total of 45(plus minus 4.92) and 6 (plus minus 0.96) crows and 46 (plus minus 1.29), 8 (plus minus 0.82) mynas were recorded as their reduced activities. Similarly the damage profiles were also variable with considerably less damage recorded as the marginal, half and full proportions, particularly in the post-treated conditions. This pattern continued almost throughout the course of the present studies. Reflecting ribbons therefore prove to be the adequately effective in reducing the damage proportions and considering their ecological importance. Possibly the propagation of reflecting ribbons and other devices should be encouraged for acquiring the long-term management measures, which would trigger safety to the agro-ecosystem.
