A wide variety of chemical constituents produced by plants are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Various components of plants or their extracts has effectively used for the treatment of many diseases. In the present study, various solvent fractions of Cassia absus seeds were subjected to antioxidant, antidiabetic and phytochemical screening. Phenols, flavonoids contents and free radical scavenging activity was evaluated by prescribed protocol. Values of free radical scavenging activity ranged from 49 to 88%. The seeds extracts were rich in phenols and the total phenolic content ranged from 52.5 to 62.7 mglg of dry weight of extract, expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE) whereas the total flavonoid concentrations varied from 0.12-0.45 CE (g/100 g dry weight). The n-butanol methanolic extract revealed greatest enzyme inhibition (12.5-70.2%) against porcine pancreatic alpha amylase. Furthermore, all the fractions demonstrated different antiglycation patterns. Phytochemical screening showed the occurrence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids and tannins. The data offers some valuable bioactivities of Cassia absus seeds in different solvents and may be considered as a potential source of biological agents for developing different applications in pharmaceutical industries.
