The paper analyses trends and anticipates changes on the sugar market in Europe. The aim of the paper is to determine the largest exporters and importers of sugar as well as their participation on the European market. The time frame of the research was the period 2010-2014. The average European export of sugar amounted to 7.9 million tons, which represented 14% of the world export. Europe’s largest and the world’s third largest exporter is France with the average export of 2.1 million tons, accounting for 27% of the total European export. Other large exporters are Germany, Belgium, Belarus and Poland, which provide more than a half of European export. Europe’s largest and the world’s ninth largest importer is Italy with 1.5 million tons and a share of 13% in European import. Other large importers are the Russian Federation, Great Britain, Spain and Belgium, which make up almost a half of European import. Sugar market in the European Union is governed by production quotas, guaranteed minimum price and trade mechanisms. Production quotas for sugar in the Europe Union, which have been heavily subsidized since coming into force in 1968, will be terminated in 2017. This will contribute to the creation of a competitive global sugar market. It is expected that sugar export from EU countries to non-EU countries will increase to reach around 3 million tons compared to the current level of 1.6 million tons; sugar import from non-EU countries is expected to decrease to 0.5 million tons compared to the current level of 3.8 million tons. This will have a negative impact on sugar industry in non-EU countries, which will need to increase competitiveness to secure their positions on the international market.
