the article is devoted to the most important field of general biology, concerning the mechanisms of inheritance and the formation of biological features, and the role of N.I. Vavilovа in the development of ideas that have found their embodiment in the development of epigenetics. The article cites a sufficient number of facts and references pointing to the inconsistency of the genocentric inheritance paradigm that prevailed until recently, embodying a too simplified, mechanical understanding of the genome's work, and also showed the negative impact of such a view on the fields of science and practice related to biology (selection, agriculture in general and medicine). The data on the influence of various processes in the genome (base methylation, histone acetylation, the effect of so-called effectors, and correction of the reading of information with DNA by the cellular medium) are given that regulate the work of the genome. The strength of epigenetics lies in the fact that it was a science that takes into account both the properties and potentialities of the genome recorded in nucleotide sequences, and the realization of these possibilities under the influence of changing environmental conditions. Not only theoretical data obtained so far, but also the most promising areas of epigenetic research, which will help to move forward to uncover the secrets of the genome's operation and use it for practical purposes, are given.
