Oil palm developed very gradually in Indonesia from 1848 to 1967, before suddenly gaining speed as a result of the government's deliberate drive to substitute coconut oil for palm oil in the country's diet. The area planted has now reached almost 3 million ha, including 50% privately owned estates. 33% smallholdings and 17% State plantations. Alongside the increase in output, the consumption of cooking oil made from oil has increased to 11 kg per capita, with the domestic market thus absorbing 60% of the CPO produced. The Indonesian share of the world market has doubled in ten years, and currently corresponds to 18% of world exports. Europe and Asia are the joint largest customers, accounting for almost 90% of Indonesian exports in 1997. (Résumé d'auteur)
