Ecklonia cava, a brown algae, is a major marine food in the Asia-Pacific region. This study analyzed the in vitro functional properties of Ecklonia cava by-product (ECBP). ECBP was prepared by drying the ethanol extraction residues of Ecklonia cava with the yield of 58% (g ECBP/g Ecklonia cava). We observed that the hot water extracts of ECBP suppressed the production of TNF-α by inhibiting its mRNA expression in RAW 264.7 cells. In contrast, gene expression of IL-6 and NF-κB increased in a dose-dependent manner. The effects of ECBP on growth factors in L6 myoblast cells showed a significant increase in insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), IGF-2, and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). Therefore, we suggest that ECBP can be economic and functional feed additives for animal industry
