Investigation of birch wood torrefaction process in a rotating pyrolysis retort | Bērza koksnes torifikācijas pētījumi rotējošā pirolīzes retortē

إنجليزي. The value of biomass can be improved by an additional treatment called torrefaction. Torrefaction is a thermochemical treatment of biomass at an inert or nitrogen atmosphere with the temperature in the range of 200–300 °C. This study focuses on detailed structural carbohydrates analysis of mild and severe torrefied birch wood shaving and their impact on the solid fuel properties (hydrophobicity, volatiles, calorific value, fixed carbon, ash content). By increasing the torrefaction temperature, the yield of solid fuel was sharply decreased up to 66.5% while the bulk density was not significantly changed. It proves the fact that lignocellulosic biomass loses its mass and heating value with no appreciable change in volume during the torrefaction. The sharply increased content of fixed carbon yield in the torrefied birch wood shavings and also higher heating value at severe torrefaction temperatures can be explained by the fact that carbonaceous material begins to form within the wood polymers structures during the heat treatment in temperatures range of 240-300 °C. Monosaccharides such as arabinose, mannose and galactose were not detected in both raw and torrefied material. The degradation of cellulose was much less extent and the increase of its proportion in the solid fuel increased up to 53.3%. By contrast, the content of lignin component was increased both per mass of solid fuel and per mass of raw feedstock by the increase of torrefaction temperature up to 290 °C. Therefore, lignin is the second largest compound in the torrefied wood material. When the torrefaction temperature is 300 °C, the extensive degradation of cellulose and light degradation of lignin can be observed. It means that carbonisation of cellulose and lignin was started, and birch wood became as a charlike solid product during the torrefaction process. The thermal properties of obtained solid fuel were substantially improved by increasing the torrefaction temperature. The moisture absorption capacity of birch wood was decreased during torrefaction procedure.

لاتفيا. Rūpniecībā, iegūstot bērza koksnes saplāksni, rodas ievērojams apjoms lēveru, ko uzskata kā mazvērtīgu blakusproduktu un var izmantot kā kurināmo. Ilgstoši uzglabājot šādu blakusproduktu, var novērot, ka tas uzņem apkārtējās vides mitrumu, tādējādi šādam kurināmajam materiālam samazinās kvalitātes īpašības. Viens no paņēmieniem, lai novērstu šo trūkumu un uzlabotu citas kurināmā fizikālķīmiskās īpašības, ir pielietot vienu no termoķīmiskajiem paņēmieniem – torifikāciju. Šajā pētījumā izpētīta torifikācijas procesa ietekme uz homogenizētu bērza koksnes lēveru skaidu fizikālo, termālo un ķīmisko īpašību izmaiņām rotējošā pirolīzes retortē. Bērza koksnes lēveru skaidas torificētas 30 min pie 250-300°C temperatūrām. Pētījuma rezultāti parādīja, ka torificētam kurināmajam var par 34% un vairāk samazināt spēju uzņemt apkārtējas vides mitrumu. Pētītājā torifikācijas temperatūru intervālā skaidri iezīmējas, ka hemiceluložu daļa ir visnestabilākā un apstrādes laikā sadalās. Izvērtējot iegūtos datus, var teikt, ka optimālā torifikācijas temperatūra ir 280°C. Pie šādas apstrādes temperatūras bērza koksnes lēveru skaidām sasniegts augstākais sadegšanas siltums (20,1 MJ/kg) un spēja saistīt apkārtējas vides mitrumu līdz 5,9 masas procentiem.
