The Institute of Plant Breeding developed the technology of producing certified virus-free and true-to-type planting materials via tissue culture (TC) to provide our garlic farmers with with good quality and clean planting materials. The on-farm trial was done on Ilocos Norte (Philippines) the highest producers (66.14%) of garlic in the country, with ten farmers-cooperators from Batac City, Pasaguin and Burgos. Prior to the trial, the farmers were given a training-workshop on how TC garlic is produced and grown in the field, and the advantages of using TC garlic over non-TC materials. Planting materials (TC bublets (Go) and non-TC bulbs) and field lay-out were supplied to all farmer-cooperative while the local cultural management was employed. The farmer cooperators were highly commendable for the successful adaption of the garlic TC technology. Production was best in Burgos (55.33-56.67% field survival) followed by Pasaquin (8.33-40.82%) and Batac (5.00-18.33%). Hotter weather condition prevailed in the latter two towns. Two farmer-cooperators from Burgos were able to produce the first generation bulbs (G1) from the 60 TC bulblets (appox. 1.5cm) provided them by the IPB at the start of the trial. The succeeding season, Ronald Garalde, the most successful in growing TC garlic, planted his G1TC and non-TC bulbs and produced 475 second generation (G2) commercial-sized TC bulbs by year 2. The bulbs were either extra-large and have an average bulb weight of 60.8g, a 65.78% yield increase using TC garlic. The findings of the study awakened the farmers and the interest of the Ilocos Norte provincial government and the LGUs in growing TC garlic, particularly on the increased yield. An additional advantage is the reduction in the risk of introducing pest and diseases from imported bulbs. The technology is now ready for wide-scale application by garlic growers throughout the country.
