Knowledge and capacity building on climate change among women of flood prone communities in Cotabato City [Philippines]
2017
Gayak, E.S.
Climate change is a global issue which brings multiple exigences. Everyone is a vulnerable prey but more adversities challenge those living in flood-prone communities. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA, 2011) elaborates that Philippines is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The threat of climate change is not gender nuetral for women and their children suffer a disproportionate amount of the impacts of the changing climate (Leuch, 2014). In response, this study investigated the knowledge and capacity building of women on climate change in flood-prone barangays [villages] in Cotabato City. It employed exploratory design and involved 289 respondents. Findings revealed that 6 out 7 women had heard about climate change and all have experienced its serious effects. Women had moderate knowledge on climate change with very high capacity in the mitigation and adaptation. There was significant difference in women's knowledge and capacities. Training, seminar/workshop, television and radio programs, an d house visit were the most common mechanisms employed in building their knowledge and capacities with the help of barangay officials, DSWD [Department of Social Welfare and Development], and DOH [Department of Health]. Conflict with work and limited time were the biggest challenges they encountered. The researcher concluded that women had some effects correct understanding on the issue yet they have misconceptions on scientific causes and effects of climate change. Simple living is the most favorable mechanism in curbing the greenhouse gases and responding to the effects of climate change. The membership and attendance in group meetings related to cash conditional transfer program have exposed them to the discussion on climate change.
