Productivity of rice-peanut cropping system in acid upland soil amended with lime, organic materials and microbial inoculants
2015
Sales, M.C.A.
The study was conducted to assess the effect of lime, organic materials and microbial inoculants on yield and nutrient use of rice and peanut in an acid upland soil and evaluate their impact on soil properties. Two levels of lime (0 and 6 t/ha) and 2 types of organic amendments (vermicompost and farmyard manure) added alone or in combination with microbial inoculants (BioGroe sup TM and Formula 4) were applied during the 2014 WS rice. An additional microbial inoculant (NitroPlus) was included during the 2014 DS peanut. Addition of organic materials alone or in combination with microbial inoculants significantly increased grain yield over the control with and without lime. Without lime, higher yield and total NPK uptake were obtained from the combined application of microbial inoculants and organic amendments particularly farmyard manure + BioGroe sup TM. Liming generally increased yield and nutrient uptake. Agronomic use and recovery efficiencies of nitrogen were improved with the combined application of organic amendments and microbial inoculants particularly vermicompost + BioGroe sup TM. Application of organic materials and microbial inoculants improved soil pH, available P, organic matter content and microbial biomass C. Liming increased soil pH, available P, exchangeable Ca and microbial biomass C. Economic analysis showed highest ROI with the application of farmyard manure + BioGroe without lime. For peanut, the effect of organic materials and microbial inoculants on seed yield was more evident without lime. Higher seed yield, NPK uptake and N use efficiency were obtained with the combined application of vermicompost + NitroPlus. Application of organic amendments improved soil available P, organic matter content and microbial biomass C. Liming increased soil pH, available P and exchangeable Ca. Higher ROIs can be obtained with the application of lime alone and with vermicompost + NitroPlus. This study demonstrates the potential of using organic amendments combined with microbial inoculants in improving and sustaining rice and peanut production at profitable levels in acid upland soils.
