Growth of para rubber (Hevea brasiliensis (Wild. Ex A. Juss.) Muell-Arg.) budded stump seedlings using different potting media and fertilization scheme
2015
Ardika, R.
This study was conducted to assess the growth of rubber budded stumps seedlings in modified potting media and applied with different forms and rates of fertilizers. The nursery experiment consisted of 17 treatments laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six replications. Six treatments consisted of pure peat, soil and compost and their combinations, five treatments consisted of peat + soil mixtures applied with chicken manure and 2 rates of each solid and foliar inorganic fertilizers, five treatments consisted of compost + soil mixtures applied with chicken manure, and 2 rates each of solid and foliar inorganic fertilizers. Control treatment was the normal practice of growing budded stump at Sembawa Research Center in South Sumatra which involved only the use of soil applied with solid fertilizer. After nursery stage, the performance of the rubber budded stumps was also monitored in the field for 10 months. Results showed that mixture of peat and soil with the application of recommended rate of solid or liquid fertilizer produced rubber budded stumps with bigger stem diameter and taller plants. The potting media stimulated early root development which led to higher nutrient uptake. These budded stumps also performed better in the field showing higher leaf nutrient concentration after 6 months and producing bigger stem diameter after 10 months.
