Evaluation of greenspaces in residential subdivisions in Laguna Province, Philippines

The study evaluated the health of greenspaces within residential subdivisions in Laguna province [Philippines]. It covered eight subdivisions that represented four research variables, including district, income class, development class, and managing institution. Initially, it described the trends in residential area development through statistics from PSA and HLURB, image analysis, and interviews. For the most part, the study analyzed regulatory compliance and assessed existing greenspace management. A case study was conducted for each study site, which involved image analysis and field validation, species inventory, and interviews. The development of residential subdivisions was found to be a major contributor to the lost of greenspace. Nonetheless, it provides ample opportunities for the conservation of greenery, as it hosts planting strips along the roads and open spaces for parks and playground. It also provides space for home gardens and it has available vacant lots for utilization. However, these opportunities are not being utilized due to non-compliance of economic and socialized housing and inadequate maintenance. The study recommended a review and rigid implementation of CLUPs and housing policies to ensure compliance. There should be technical experts involved in the design of greenspaces, and planning of arboricultural and management practices from species selection, planting to care and maintenance. Most importantly, support from key stakeholders is vital to the success of greenspace conservation initiatives.
