Nowadays, the management of mixed fisheries presents a particular challenge for fisheries science and management. This paper aims to contribute to the development of a model of management of mixed fisheries. For this reason, the overall objective of this study is the analysis of the application of a mixed fishery evaluation tool used in Western Australia and the Principe 1 of the MSC Mixed Fisheries Standard to the demersal trawl fishery of the Mediterranean GSA 6 area. In order to apply the first of the tools, a Productivity and Susceptibility Analysis (PSA) was carried out, in which attributes related to the biology of the species and its susceptibility to the fishing activities were evaluated to identify the most vulnerable species that compose the catch. These species were referred to as indicators, because their status reflects the status of the entire group they represent. For this, all species were grouped into nine groups of similar taxonomy and habitat and their representativeness was verified through a retrospective analysis. The results showed the need for a series of improvements such as improve the quality and quantity of data, the adjustment of cutting values to the Mediterranean and the definition in more detail of some criteria used. As to the analysis of the new mixed fisheries standard, its implementation would require an improvement action plan where effective measures to reduce fishing effort would be implemented and where indicator species would become the central objective of the assessments.
