The common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is one of the most important woody plants in forestry. In recent decades, this species has suffered widespread dieback in Europe. In order to find adequate strategies for its protection, it is necessary to investigate different aspects of the effects of several types of mycoses in different conditions. `Biogradska Gora` National Park is one of few preserved areas that contain valuable old-growth forest trees of this species. In order to improve the integrated strategies for the protection of this species in the area of great natural value, we compared the number of its most common parasitic and saprophytic fungal species with the number of fungi occurring in other forest stands. It was found that the number of fungal species varies with the type of stand. i.e. the number of fungal species found in `Biogradska Gora` National Park is different from the number of species found in the investigated stands. Some species occur frequently and they can be found in several different stands while there are species that are very rare.
