The current spring wheat breeding task in Latvia was aimed to create new spring wheat genotypes adapted to organic management. The evolutionary breeding method by creating composite cross populations (CCPs) can increase resilience against environmental variation. The breeding which started with spring barley in Latvia has shown that it is possible to obtain CCPs with advantages over homogenous varieties in respect to the yield and yield stability in conditions of organic farming. 10 parental genotypes of most popular spring wheat varieties: ‘Uffo’ (LV, ‘Arabella’, ‘Bombona’, ‘Jasna’ (PL), ‘Mirakel’ (NOR), ‘Vinjett’, ‘Sorbas’, ‘Fasan’, ‘KWS Willow’ (DEU) and ‘Mooni’ (EST) were evaluated during 2019 using organic farming system in the location Stende with the aim to select parents for creation of spring wheat CCP. Also varieties mixture and four heterogeneous populations from Denmark and Germany were evaluated in the same conditions. The grain yield and quality 1000 kernel weight (TKW), protein and gluten content, and the volume weight were tested. The results of investigations showed that grain yield of populations and varieties mixture had not exceeded average grain yield of genotypes. The highest grain quality (protein and gluten content, and Zeleny index) was found in CCP from Denmark PP 2.
