The studied field of short rotation trees (birch and aspen) is located in Skrīveri municipality in “Pardenči”. Trees in the experimental area were planted in 2011. This area was divided in four blocks of different rows. Each block was 20 m long and 24 m wide. Blocks differ in fertilizer type used in the area. In this experimental tree stand the data about vegetation of tree understory were gathered from the 3rd to the 7th year after planting. Vegetation was described in plots. Also, tree height and width were described. These parameters and vegetation data were compared between birch and aspen sampling plots. Results showed that the most effective type of fertilizers is sewage sludge. The birch stand is richer in plant diversity than the aspen stand, but the amount of herbaceous species tends to decrease year by year. We found also two herbaceous plant species characteristic of natural grasslands and two invasive plant species in the studied area. The plants growing in short rotation coppice can provide some of ecosystem services, for example, soil fertilization of atmospheric nitrogen by leguminous plants. One of the most common leguminous plants in studied are is white clover Trifolium repens L. The results show that in the birch stand in the time period from the 4th to the 7th year after planting the soil was enriched by 16.728 kg N2 haE−1 – 79.968 kg N2 haE−1.
