Genotoxic properties of water and sediment from the Aringay and Bued Rivers [Philippines] using Allium test

The importance of various pollutants into river water system poses risks on aquatic organism and human health since water and sediment samples from a contaminated river could exhibit genotoxic property. The genotoxic properties of the water and sediment from the Aringay and Bued Rivers were investigated using Allium test through mean root length (RL), mitotic index (M1), percent chromosomal aberration (PCA) and chromosomal aberration observed. It was done by exposing Allium cepa L. root tips to the water and sediment samples, to the positive control (300 mMH2O2), and to the negative control for water (mineral H2O) and sediment (pulverized glass). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Comparison showed that the treatments varied significantly from each other and from the control groups, in terms of RL, M1, and PCA. Neverthless, the sediment samples have greater genotoxic properties than the water samples from both rivers but significantly different from the positive control.
