Microfiltration is membrane technique widely used in biotechnology. Cross-flow microfiltration represents effective and economically efficient alternative compared to other separation methods. However, membrane fouling is a serious draw-back related to membrane applications, with permeate flux decrease as the major consequence of this phenomena. Many studies have shown that static mixer as turbulence promotor increases wall shear stress, thus improving the permeate flux compared to the conventional cross-flow processes. Chemical agents dominate in crop protection, but increasing concern about environmental protection and influence on human health has led to development and application of alternative agents. Biological control represents the use of beneficial organisms or their metabolites for crop protection. The ability of the antimicrobial component synthesis is widespread in the world of microorganisms. The largest number of antimicrobial compounds producers belong to the genus Streptomyces. Influence of suspension feed flow on permeate flux increase and specific energy consumption in systems with and without static mixer during cross-flow microfiltration of Streptomyces hygroscopicus cultivation broth was estimated in this study. Additionally, antifungal activities of permeate and retentate obtained after microfiltration were tested against apple rot causers (Colletotrichum acutatum, Alternaria spp. and Fusarium sp.). According to the obtained results, static mixer application has caused the permeate flux increase, while specific energy consumption has been positive at higher feed flow value. Retentate had higher antifungal activity than permeate, with full concentration of antifungal components in retentate in case of testing antifungal activity against Alternaria spp.
