The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of late fall foliar boron (B) spray on the B content of dormant spur flower buds and fruit set of low yielding 0900 Ziraat sweet cherry trees which is the most important export cultivar of Turkey. In this study four doses of boron (0-50-75-100 g/tree ) were sprayed (Etidot-67, % 20.8 B) to eight years old 0900 Ziraat sweet cherry trees four weeks prior to leaf fall. Each treatment were repeated on three trees. B content of flower buds was determined monthly in the dormant season (December, January, February, March). In order to determine fruit set, four branches with two- and three- year- old wood (total length was approximately 1 meter for each branch) were labeled, and flowers and fruits were counted in the next spring.Fall B sprays significantly increased the B content in the dormant flower buds of sweet cherry trees. The boron sprays drastically improved fruit set of this cultivar. The mean fruit set was only 15.7 % in untreated control trees while it was ranged from 30.4 % to 36.3 % in boron sprayed trees. It appeared that fall boron sprays to 0900 Ziraat sweet cherry trees which had optimum leaf B content prior to sprays, enhanced the B status of flower buds which in turn increased the fruit set percentage of trees in spring.
