Medicinal and aromatic plant genetic resources collection, conservation and evaluation studies began in 1979 and have continued within "Aegean Agricultural Research Institue (AARI) Genetic Resources Studies" until today. In this context, 2654 herbarium samples, 2306 seed samples and 1968 vegetative samples have collected and preserved in the IZ herbarium, National Gene Bank and in the field so far. In some collected materials which have economic importance adaptation, agronomy and breeding activities were carried out and candidate varieties have been developed. Some of these species Origanum onites, Salvia fruticosa, Scolymus hispanicus, Pimpinella anisum, Sideritis perfoliata, Melissa officinalis, Laurus nobilis, Rosa spp., Mentha spp. and Orchidaceae family, connected to the genus and species. In addition, renovation and characterization studies are continuing, renovation and characterizations studies of 335 samples belong to 46 species have been completed. This study is part of an ongoing project being carried out, the collection of species in different parts of our country can be considered as genetic resources; conservation, characterization and evaluation work will be continued.
