Agricultura sostenible e investigación agrícola en el INIA

This descriptive correlation study was designed to describe the level of involvement of agricultural researchers at the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) ( previously known as FONAIAP) in sustainable agricultural activities in Venezuela. The study investigates the relationships between involvement in sustainable agriculture and orientation; attitude, and selected personal characteristics. A questionnaire divided into four parts was elaborated, in which the following characteristics were identified: orientation toward sustainable agriculture, attitude toward sustainable agriculture, involvement in sustainable agriculture and related personal characteristics. The target population was composed of 386 agricultural INIA researchers distributed in 17 research units. A proportional stratified sampling method was used to select 96 (25%) agricultural researchers to be included in the sample. 100% of the sample population responded. The results indicate a low level of use of components of sustainable agriculture in agricultural research activities, an open attitude towards sustainable agriculture, and a slightly positive attitude towards sustainable agriculture research. However, older researchers had more involvement in sustainable agriculture activities than younger researchers (r = 0.236, significant a 0.05). Researchers indicated that socioeconomic, environmental, and productive components are necessary in order to apply and maintain sustainable agriculture. Participation in sustainable agriculture activities was low and oriented towards training. Publication and generation of technology was practically nil. This study suggests the need for INIA researchers to increase their level of involvement in sustainable agriculture if they expect to reach small and subsistence farmers in Venezuela and to generate appropriate sustainable technology.

Este estudio descriptivo - correlacional fue diseñado para describir el nivel de aplicación de los conceptos de agricultura sostenible en la investigación agrícola por parte de los investigadores del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrícolas (INIA) anterior FONAIAP en Venezuela. Se investigó las relaciones existentes entre nivel de participación en agricultura sostenible y orientación; aptitud y las características personales seleccionadas. Se elaboró un cuestionario con cuatro partes, en el cual se identificó: orientación, aptitud, participación hacia la agricultura sostenible y las características personales seleccionadas. La población objeto fue de 386 investigadores del INIA el cual consta de 17 unidades a nivel nacional, se tomó una muestra estratificada al azar de noventa y seis investigadores (25%). Se obtuvo un 100% de respuesta. Los resultados indicaron un bajo nivel en el uso de los componentes de la agricultura sostenible en la elaboración de las actividades de investigación agrícola, una orientación amplia hacia la agricultura sostenible, y una aptitud ligeramente positiva hacia la agricultura sostenible. Los investigadores de mayor edad mostraron una mayor participación en actividades sostenibles (r = 0.236, significativo alpha 0.05). Los investigadores indicaron como necesarios los componentes socioeconómicos, ambientales y productivos para la aplicación de una agricultura sostenible. La participación en actividades de sostenibilidad fue baja, concentrándose mayormente en adiestramientos y casi nula en generación y publicación de tecnologías. Es necesario incrementar el nivel de participación por parte de los investigadores en actividades de agricultura sostenible y adiestrar a los investigadores noveles si se aspira a promover el desarrollo de los pequeños y medianos productores y a generar tecnología sostenible apropiada.
