Modelling the nitrogen flows from the dairying area of the Fontaine-du-Theil river catchment basin | Modélisation des flux d'azote dans le bassin versant laitier de La Fontaine-du-Theil

Les études et simulations effectuées sur le bassin versant de la Fontaine-du-Theil, petit bassin laitier intensif de Bretagne, apportent des éléments de réflexion intéressants. Diverses approches ont été réalisées pour comprendre, suivre et évaluer les pertes d'azote vers l'eau à l'échelle de ce territoire : suivi des pratiques parcellaires, de fertilisation, de gestion des couverts et des troupeaux sur l'exploitation, effets sur les indicateurs environnementaux... Les scénarios d'optimisation des pratiques dans les systèmes en place montrent qu'en réduisant de 60 % les excédents azotés dans les fermes, les surfaces classées à risque faible de lessivage passent de 21 % à 78 % du bassin et la concentration en nitrate simulée à l'exutoire atteint 40-45 mg NO3/l après 20 ans. Pour atteindre plus rapidement l'objectif de potabilité de l'eau, une désintensification des systèmes fourragers est à envisager.

In order to improve the quality of water, various modifications of the farming practices may be contemplated, but what can be their impact in the medium or the long term on the nitrogen flows? Studies and simulations made on the catchment basin of the Fontaine-du-Theil river, a small dairying area in Brittany, supplied interesting results regarding this problem. Various approaches were followed in order to understand, to monitor and to evaluate the losses of nitrogen into the water at the scale of this territory: monitoring the field pattern practices and the fertilisation practices, the management of plant covers and of livestock on the farms, the effects on the environmental indicators, etc. The models for optimizing the practices in the existing systems show that when the nitrogen excesses on the farms are reduced by 60 %, the areas classified as having a low leaching risk increase from a proportion of 21 % of the basin area to one of 78 %, and that the nitrate concentration at the outlet reaches a level of 40-45 mg NO3 per litre after 20 years. If the goal of drinkable water is to be attained at an earlier date, a dis-intensification of the forage systems must be contemplated.
