The physical and chemical properties of the two species of bamboo (Gigantochloa scortechinii known as 'semantan' and Gigantochloa ligulata known as 'tumpat') have been studied at three different portions along the culm (basal, middle and top). It was found out that the holocellulose content for semantan and tumpat bamboo increasing from the base to the top portion. Alpha-cellulose content also increasing from the basal to the top portion for both bamboos. The lignin content from the base to the top portion ofthe bamboo are decreasing for the bamboos. The top portion had the highest extractive content for both semantan and tumpat bamboo. The moisture content along the bamboo decreasing from the bottom to the top portion. Density ofbamboo varied along the culm height. Results showed a decreasing density from the bottom to top portion. It is generally accepted that an increment in density of theculm is mainlyduetothethickening ofthecellwall.Thesize ofsemantan and tumpat bamboo was decreasing from basal to top portion in terms of diameter and thickness.
