Can ant be a bioindicator? [Malaysia]
1994
Maryati-Mohamed
The close relationship between abiotic factors in the environment and insects makes this group of animals suitable as an agent which can indicate changes in the environmental conditions. Ant being abundant, in number of individual and species, and well distributed in the terrestrial ecosystem in Malaysia is a potential candidate. Collections carried out in several locations in east and west Malaysia from forests (primary, secondary, lowlands and highlands), plantations (oil palm and cocoa), and housing estates indicated that ants were more abundant in terms of number of species and/or individuals in certain types of environment than in others. In this paper certain species are discussed as to their potential to indicate environmental conditions, and perhaps changes
