Nephrotic syndrome was induced in rats with 15gm puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN)/100g body weight. Urine and plasma fibronectin were analyzed in these rats by rocket immunoelectrophoresis was not detected in urine between days 0 (control) and days 4 inclusive, post-PAN. At day 6 post-PAN the urine fibronectin concentration was 146.6 ±39.9 µg/ml. The fibronection concentration further increased to 317.8± 14.4µg/ml urine at day 8 and 337.4± µg/ml urine at day 10 post-PAN. The detection of fibronection in urine coincided with significant elevation of plasma fibronectin concentration (P<0.05). We conclude that there is an increased urine fibronectin concentration in PAN-induced rat nephrotic symdrome, a result of increase in plasma fibronection concentration which has exceeded the renal threshold.
